Next-Level Ingredients & How They Benefit You
Alpha GPC improves memory, mood, and attention . Also known as L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine, it supplies the brain with choline, an essential nutrient that promotes strong brain cells and influences the production of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Alpha GPC is especially useful in targeting cognitive impairments by improving memory and overall mental performance without causing the frustrating side effects that are associated with chemical-based nootropics [2, 3]. Alpha GPC and citicoline (COGNIZIN® Citicoline) are frequently combined to enhance the cognition-boosting benefits .
Rhodiola rosea is a well-known nootropic that heightens mental energy as well as the ability to focus, concentrate, and perform mental tasks . This herb is also referred to as an adaptogen because it improves the body’s capacity to handle mental stress by targeting burnout, mental fatigue, and anxiety [40-42]. It amplifies the body’s resistance to biological and physical stressors as well . Accordingly, research shows that rhodiola supplementation targets emotional changes, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, and other issues that are associated with psychological distress [43-45].
Ashwagandha, also known as Whithania somnifera, is a popular herb that is well known for its nootropic properties . Research shows that it improves executive functions such as learning acquisition, memory retention, information processing speed, and attentiveness (focus) [4-6]. Ashwagandha also has anti-stress and anti-anxiety properties by reducing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol [7-9].
Huperzine A is a potent nootropic that promotes focus, boosts memory, and regulates mood. It does this by disrupting the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme that rapidly breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (a chemical messenger in the brain). This particular neurotransmitter helps regulate memory, focus, attention, and mood [46-50]. Heightened AChE activity can lead to low levels of acetylcholine [51-55]. Huperzine A prevents acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine and in doing so, enhances cognition by supporting healthy levels of acetylcholine in the brain [46- 51].
Lion’s mane mushroom, which is also known as Hericium Erinaceus, supports memory, thought processing, focus, and mood . This potent herb promotes nerve cell growth and provides nerves with protection against free radical (toxin-induced) damage [12, 13]. This property is especially beneficial toward delaying the development or progression of age-related cognitive issues that are linked to brain cell or nerve cell damage . Lion’s mane mushroom also decreases the buildup of amyloid beta protein in the brain, which is a toxic protein that is linked to cognitive impairment .
Bacopa Monnieri, which is also known as water hyssop, herb of grace, thyme-leaved gratiola, and brahmi, is a well-known botanical that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. This potent herb contains active substances called bacosides that protect cells in the brain from free radical (toxin) damage and also enhance signal transfer in a specific area of the brain called the hippocampus . This is the region of the brain where memory processing occurs; therefore, Bacopa Monnieri supplementation promotes exceptional memory function. [57-60]
L-Theanine is a beneficial amino acid that is naturally found in certain tea leaves . When it is consumed regularly, it not only functions as a nootropic that improves mental focus, but it also promotes relaxation, supports the immune system, and improves sleep quality [18-20]. In particular, its calming effect makes it easier for you to remain focused during demanding activities or tasks. Furthermore, servings between 50 to 200 mg help heighten mood as well as creativity [21-23]. L-Theanine also influences the levels of neurotransmitters (chemicals in the brain) such as dopamine and serotonin, which play a role in working memory, attention, mood, stress response, and sleep [18, 19, 23, 24].
Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is an important vitamin that promotes the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which are a source of nutrients for neurotransmitters and red blood cells . Due to its ability to support the production of neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, and serotonin, this particular vitamin helps optimize brain function by supporting mood regulation, emotional control, learning, alertness, and stress response, among others [61-63].
Citicoline supports memory, mood, and overall mental performance, while providing protection against free radical (toxin) damage [25,26, 28]. Citicoline increasing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations, an essential source for the brain [27,28]. In addition, citicoline also amplifies the production of norepinephrine and dopamine, both of which are neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) that help regulate mood and memory functions [29,30].
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, has anti-fatigue properties. It promotes energy production and improves alertness by enhancing the body’s ability to regulate melatonin levels [67,68]. Similar to vitamin B6, B12 enhances the production of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) such as dopamine and serotonin. In doing so, proper vitamin B12 intake reduces the occurrence of irritability, mood fluctuations, sleep disturbances, and even psychiatric symptoms that may be caused by inadequate neurotransmitter production [70,71].
Phosphatidylserine enhances memory function and signal transfer in the brain [31-34]. This phospholipid has neuroprotective properties, meaning it protects nerve cells in the brain . Phosphatidylserine supplementation improves focus by not only amplifying neurotransmitter activity and signal transfer, but also by promoting the transportation of nutrients (e.g., oxygen, glucose) into brain cells [35, 37-39].
L-tyrosine is an amino acid that sharpens the brain, boosts memory function, heightens mood, increases mental focus, intensifies alertness, and speeds up thinking processes by stimulating neurotransmitter production . More specifically, it influences the activity of norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine, which are chemical messengers in the brain [72-74]. This particular amino acid is especially beneficial for individuals who frequently endure high stress levels, because frequent exposure to intense stress can lower the concentration of epinephrine and dopamine in the brain .
Ginseng is a well-known energy-boosting herb . Research shows that this particular type of ginseng promotes vitality, boosts physical performance, enhances resistance to stress, and has anti-aging properties [78, 79]. Its energy-boosting properties also lead to heightened mood, behavior, and memory processing [80-82]. The main active components in Ginseng are ginsenosides. Ginsenosides have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cell-protecting properties [80-84]. They also support the health of the immune and nervous system [80, 84].
Ginkgo Biloba is a well-known herb that boosts mental performance and energy levels [91,92]. It is an excellent source of terpenoids and flavonoids, which have strong antioxidant properties that protect cells throughout the body [85-89]. Ginkgo biloba also improves circulation, which increases energy levels by amplifying the absorption and transportation of nutrients [89,90]. The combination of Ginkgo biloba and Panax ginseng dramatically boosts working and long-term memory .
